From Tesla Motors Wiki

  • 18650 A type of Lithium-ion battery cell, named after its size: roughly 18mm diameter by 65mm long.
  • Battery Swap In 2013 Tesla Motors demonstrated the ability to remove and replace the Model S battery in approximately 90 seconds. They indicated that they would pilot this technology with a view to putting it into production.
  • BEV Battery Electric Vehicle
  • Bricking When Lithium-ion batteries are completely depleted they can suffer irreparable damage to the chemicals rendering them unable to be recharged. Such a battery is said to be “bricked” because it is as much use as a brick.
  • CCI The Center Console Insert, an aftermarket console from EVannex.
  • CHAdeMO Originating in Japan, it is the trade name of a quick charging method for battery electric vehicles. The name is a pun for “O cha demo ikaga de- suka” in Japanese, meaning, “Let’s have some tea,” referring to the time it takes to charge the car. It delivers up to 62.5 kW of high-voltage direct current via a special electrical connector. A CHAdeMO adapter for the UMC is “coming soon” in the Tesla online store.
  • Charge Port The port on the rear left side of Model S into which the charging cable (UMC) is inserted.
  • Charger Generic name for any device that supplies power to Model S, and especially the device in the car that converts AC electricity from the charge port to DC electricity for the battery—strictly speaking a rectifier.
  • Creep The software controlled function that mimics the behavior of automat- ic transmission cars that “creep” forward at low revs due to drag in the torque converter.
  • Delivery Specialist Towards the end of the production process you will be assigned a contact person, the Delivery Specialist, who will work with you on the details of the delivery and the final paperwork. They should be available to walk you through the car when it is delivered.
  • EV Electric Vehicle
  • Frunk The “front trunk”, under the hood. (Nicknamed the Froot in the UK for "front boot")
  • HPWC The High Power Wall Connector. This permanently installed, wall-mounted device provides up to 80A of current to Model S when charging at home. It forms part of the High Power Home Charging Option (together with the optional 2nd charger in the car).
  • ICE Internal Combustion Engine - a "normal" petrol or diesel engined car.
  • ICEd When an ICE vehicle is in an EV spot
  • Inverter The device in the car that converts DC electricity from the battery to three-phase AC electricity for the motor. Also called the Power Electron- ics Module in Roadster.
  • J1772 Officially SAE J1772-2009, it is a North American standard for electrical connectors for electric vehicles maintained by the Society of Automotive Engineers. Most non-Tesla public charging stations conform to J1772.
  • kWh Abbreviation for Kilowatt-hour. A measure of energy. Typically used to describe battery capacity, battery charge level, or amount of charge desired or received when charging.
  • Lithium-ion Descriptive name of the type of rechargeable battery used in Model S. The name reflects the chemical makeup of the battery contents—specifically the positively charged ion of the metal Lithium, generated during the chemical reaction.
  • MS [Model S]
  • NEMA 14-50 The National Electrical Manufacturers Association 14-50 Connector is a 50 Amp, 3 wire, single-phase earthing connector, often used for electric cooking ranges and ovens, and for the main heating element of clothes dryers. It has become the preferred connector for home charging in North America for Model S.
  • OTA Over-the-air. Used to describe the ability of the car to receive software updates over the car’s 3G and Wi-Fi data connections.
  • P85 MS with Performance 85 kWhr Battery
  • P85+ P85 with suspension package
  • Regen/Regenerative braking The act of recharging the battery using current generated from the mo- tor when it acts as an electrical generator when slowing down or going downhill.
  • S40 MS with 40 kWhr Battery (actually a crippled 60 kWh battery. No longer available)
  • S60 MS with 60 kWhr Battery
  • S85 MS with 85 kWhr Battery
  • SC Service Center (or Supercharger or Solar City)
  • SoC State of Charge - % 'full' of the main traction battery.
  • Supercharger Tesla Motors’ high speed charging station. A Supercharger consists of two to eight or more bays supplying direct current at up to 400 V and 400 A.
  • TM Tesla Motors Inc
  • TMC Tesla Motors Club (another forum)
  • TPMS Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Traction Battery/Battery pack The main battery in the floor of Model S containing Lithium-ion cells. It is the source of motive power for the car, supplying current via the inverter to the motor.
  • Trunk Well The space below the trunk. Rear facing child seats fold down into this area when not in use; it is usable space for cars without rear facing seats.
  • TSLA Stock Symbol for Tesla.
  • UMC The Universal Mobile Connector. The cable and electronics used to con- nect the car’s charging port to the wall outlet.
  • Wh/m Watt-hours per mile. A measure of energy consumption per unit distance. The most common method of comparing one owner’s energy consump- tion to another, and to Tesla’s stated performance.
  • Yacht Floor The optional infill for the open center console area in Model S.
